Every experienced sports parent has a version of the same story: the question they wish they had asked before the season started. Travel sports asks a lot of families, and the difference between a great season and a hard one usually comes down to expectations that were never made explicit.
Ask these fifteen questions before you commit to any travel team, in any sport. Write the answers down. A program's willingness to answer directly is itself an answer.
Playing time and development
Playing time is the number one source of mid-season conflict in youth sports, and almost all of it traces back to assumptions that were never discussed.
- 1. How is playing time decided, and is any minimum guaranteed?
- 2. How large is the roster, and how many players compete for my child's position?
- 3. What does player development look like outside of games?
- 4. How do you communicate with a family when a player's role changes?
- 5. Who coaches my child's team specifically, and what is their background?
Commitment and logistics
The season on the calendar and the season in real life are often different. Get specific about what the program expects from your family.
- 6. What is the full cost of the season, including uniforms, tournaments, and travel?
- 7. How many weekends will we travel, and how far?
- 8. What happens if we have a conflict with a tournament date?
- 9. When are payments due, and what is the refund policy if we leave mid-season?
- 10. How much notice do families get for schedule changes?
Culture and accountability
Culture is hard to see at a tryout and easy to feel by October. These questions surface it early.
- 11. How do you handle conflicts between a parent and a coach?
- 12. What are your rules for playing up an age group?
- 13. How many families from last season are returning?
- 14. Can I speak with two or three current or former families?
- 15. What kind of player and family is not a fit for this program?
Then verify the answers
Good programs answer these questions consistently because the answers are real. The final step is checking the program's verified reviews, where families who already lived the season rate how the program actually handled playing time, coaching, and communication. When a program's answers match its reviews, you can commit with confidence.
Fifteen questions, asked before you sign, prevent most of the conflicts that derail travel seasons. Direct answers plus consistent verified reviews equal a program you can trust.
